About our Sister City Relationships

Sutherland Shire has two Sister City Agreements - one with Chuo City in Tokyo, Japan, and one with Lakewood in Denver, Colorado, USA.

In Sutherland, all Sister City agreements are supported by Community members. The Sister City responsibilities are split between Sutherland Shire Council and Community Volunteer Associations made up of members of the community. 

 

Sutherland Shire Council is responsible for all contact at a Government level. The Community Associations are responsible for the day-to-day running, organisation and promotion of all other contact between the two communities.  Since the sister Cities agreements were signed the Sister city Association has facilitated many engagements between the two sets of Communities including art exchanges, organising connections with Chuo City for the Australian Paralympics team at the Tokyo Olympics and assisting individuals from Sutherland Shire to connect with the Sister City communities.

The Association also organises and facilitates a student ambassador program between Sutherland Shire high schools and high schools in Chuo City, Tokyo.  This is a cultural engagement program and not necessarily language study based. Sutherland shire - Chuo Japan Sister City Association Incorporated and the Sutherland - Lakewood Sister City Committee are both fully incorporated Non-Profit organisations registered with New South Wales Fair Trading.
